Juvenile Justice in Pennsylvania
Unlike the adult criminal system, the juvenile justice system emphasizes rehabilitation over punishment with the ultimate goal of helping children become functioning members of society.
A minor found to have committed a crime is classified as “delinquent” rather than convicted. First-time offenders are usually eligible for probation, which may include performing community service and paying restitution. Punishments for more severe crimes may include electronic home monitoring or placement in a juvenile detention facility.

Allegheny County Juvenile Hearings
Juvenile law cases generally involve three types of hearings: detention hearing, adjudication hearing, and disposition hearing. First, at the detention hearing, it is determined whether the child can return home or must be held at a detention facility until the next hearing date.
Next, at the adjudication hearing, a judge determines whether the child should be classified as delinquent. Finally, at the disposition hearing, a judge may impose a sentence on the juvenile that ranges anywhere from probation to out of home detention.
